Nutrition and early childhood development are critical foundations for the growth of individuals and the progress of communities. In Kawambwa District, these issues remain a major public health concern. With under 2 years stunting levels standing at 30.8%, underweight 9.5 % and wasting at 4.2 % this is according to the SUN/MCDP II Endline survey 2025. The early years of a child’s life determine not only their physical growth but also their cognitive ability, emotional well-being, and future productivity. Without proper attention to nutrition and development during this stage, children are at risk of lifelong disadvantages.

The first 1,000 days of life, from conception to a child’s second birthday, are the most important period for growth and development. During this time, the brain develops rapidly, forming the foundation for learning, behavior, and health. Proper nutrition during this stage ensures that children develop strong immune systems, healthy bodies, and active minds. On the other hand, poor nutrition can lead to stunting, weakened immunity, delayed development, and reduced learning capacity. Early childhood development goes beyond physical growth. It includes cognitive, social, and emotional development.

A well-nourished child is more likely to be active, curious, and ready to learn. In contrast, a malnourished child may struggle to concentrate, interact with others, and perform well in school. This demonstrates that nutrition and development are closely linked and cannot be addressed separately. In Zambia, malnutrition remains a significant challenge, with many children under the age of five experiencing stunted growth and micronutrient deficiencies.
