Kawambwa Town Council Public Health Department has seized expired 82 x 500mls canned flying fish, 2 X 500mls canned castle lite, 7 X 150 mls muster chilli, 5 X 2ltrs Just drink from two shops all valued at K 2, 440.00.
The Local Authority has further seized contaminated meat from a butchery in the Central Business District as follows; 15.8 kg offals, 22.7 kg bones, 2.5 kg steak and 0.1 kg of sawdust all valued at K 3, 663.50.
Selling expired products is an offence as it contravenes the provisions of the Food Safety Act No. 7 of 2019, the Public Health Act Cap 295 of the Laws of Zambia and the Consumer Protection Act of 2010 of the Laws of Zambia.
The action taken by the Local Authority demonstrates the commitment that the Council attaches to safeguarding public health and ensuring consumers are protected from potential health risks.
The Local Authority will continue monitoring and conducting regular inspections as well as heightening the patrols of food products in all stores around the district, so as to enforce arrests on all shop owners putting the lives of consumers at risk.
In this regard, shop owners are urged to monitor their products and ensure they dispose off any expired products because any business person that shall be found wanting shall be prosecuted in the courts of Law for violating laws and putting lives of members of the general public in danger.
As a local Authority we are also urging consumers to be vigilant and normalize checking the expiry dates each time they make a purchase of any product and further report to the Local Authority if they come across any store selling expired products.
In the same vein, we are sending a stern warning to the business sector in the district who may have expired products on their shelves or storerooms to immediately dispose off inform the Kawambwa Town Council Public Health Department so that they can be helped to dispose off the expired products.
