Public Health Section

The Public Health Section covers various operates within the perimeters of the 5 pillars of
Environmental Health, which are inclusive of:
- Community Health
- Food Safety and Hygiene
- Pollution Control
- Occupational Health and Safety, and
- Built Environment.

1. Procedure for obtaining Permits and or Licenses.
• Written application or request to the Council Secretary including:
- Complete names of the applicant.
- A photocopy of the Green National Registration Card (REG)
- Proposed location of the intended business or function.
- Nature of business or function.
- Reachable contact details of the applicant.
- Other relevant documents. E.g., PACRA registration certificate

• The application is followed up with an inspection from responsible Council
department(s) or office(s). E.g., Planning department to assess the suitability
of the proposed location in respect to the nature of business.

• A written letter detailing reasons for approval or decline of application to
the applicant based on the findings of the inspection(s).

3. Other services under Public Health Section
• Abatement of Nuisances
A nuisance is any act not wanted by Law or an omission to discharge a legal
duty which act of omission abstracts or causes inconvenience or damage to
the Public in the exercise of their common right. E.g., Any factory or trade
premises not kept in a clean state. The Public have the right to report such
occurrences to the Council.
- Reports of nuisances can be communicated through calls or written
notices by members of the Public; indicating the author (cause) of the
nuisance, the nature of the nuisance, and the location.
- The Council is responsible for dealing with the nuisance as it sees fit
guided by Law.
- Reports of nuisances are not availed to the author. Confidentiality is
guaranteed.
• Issuance of Burial Permits
The Council currently has one Cemetery which is distinctly divided into three
sections namely; Low, Medium, and Hight Cost. Clients choose to burry from any
of the sections hereon stated upon payment of either K100, K300, or K 500
respectively. A burial permit is only issued upon providing the following
documents:
- Photocopy of the Death Certificate of the deceased or a BID form.
- Photocopy of the Notice of Death, completely filled and signed by
designated personnel.
- Photocopy of the Deceased’s REG.
- Photocopy of the REG of the person in charge of the burial.
- Duplicate copy of the receipt of payment issued by the Councils’
Licensing Office.
Upon provision of the items above, the client is issued a Burial Permit that
allows them access to the burial site and conduct the burial services.
• Solid Waste Management
The Public Health Section facilitates waste management, including waste
collection, transportation, and dumping at the designated dump site. The management
of waste happens on a daily basis, following an outlined schedule. Areas of collection
include:
- The Central Business District (CBD)
- Lodges
- Government and Private Institutions and Companies.
