                 FISHERIES DERPARTMENT

This Department is responsible for the management and development of fisheries and aquaculture activities.

Key Functions Include:

  • Conserving and managing fishery resources and aquatic ecosystems.
  • Enforcing the seasonal fishing ban to protect breeding cycles.
  • Providing extension services in aquaculture and capture fisheries.
  • Conducting inspections and ensuring compliance with aquatic standards.
  • Promoting fish farming through training, regulation, and education.
  • Supporting fishery research and dissemination of technical knowledge.

The following permits can be obtained under Fisheries and Aqua-culture services.

  • Fish import and export permits.
  • Commercial fishing licenses.
  • Boat registration.
  • Fingerling sale.
  • Fingerling production and distribution certificate.
  • Aquaculture assessment report.
  • Special fishing license.
  • Artisanal fishing license.
  • Authority for introduction and translocation of aquatic species.

       

                 VETERINARY DEPARTMENT

This department focuses on animal health, livestock production, and disease control to improve the livelihoods of livestock keepers and safeguard public health. Its activities are aligned with both national veterinary policies and local needs.

Key units include:

  • Veterinary Public Health Unit.
    • Conducts vaccination campaigns against diseases such as Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), East Coast Fever (ECF), Newcastle Disease, and rabies.
    • Oversees abattoir inspections and meat hygiene to ensure safe meat supply.
  • Livestock Development Unit.
    • Promotes improved livestock breeds through artificial insemination and livestock restocking programs.
    • Provides technical advice on animal husbandry, feeding, housing, and pasture management.
    • Supports the establishment of livestock infrastructure such as dip tanks, spray races, and kraals.
  • Animal Health Surveillance & Disease Control Unit.
    • Monitors and reports on animal disease outbreaks.
    • Implements quarantine measures and movement controls where necessary.
    • Coordinates with national veterinary services on disease eradication programs.

MID YEAR REPORT - 2025

The report covers activities from April to June (2nd quarter) and July to date (3rd quarter) of 2025. The department consists of Fisheries, Livestock Development, Veterinary Services, and Marketing sections, focusing on promoting food security, income generation, and improved livelihoods.

Key Achievements

  1. Fisheries Section:
    • Trained 72 fish farmers in pond management, with one more training planned.
    • Conducted fish stocking, monitoring, and extension visits.
    • Recorded 3.014 tons of fish produced under aquaculture.
    • 7,000 fingerlings stocked for 5 fish farmers.
    • 5 fish ponds constructed against a target of 4.
  2. Veterinary Services:
    • Vaccinated 6,586 animals (mostly broiler chickens), exceeding the target of 5,000.
    • Conducted deworming (697 cases), treatment (1,698 cases), and dipping/spraying (307 cases).
    • Conducted 149 farm visits, surpassing the target of 100.
    • No major economic diseases reported, but 25 dog bite cases were recorded.
  3. Livestock Development:
    • Demonstrated technologies like crush pen construction, tail docking, and teeth creeping.
    • Trained 160 farmers in cattle, goat, pig, and village chicken management.
  4. Fisheries and Livestock Marketing:
    • Trained 26 farmers in agribusiness, with one more training planned.
    • Produced 4 market information bulletins out of a target of 6.
    • Successfully participated in 4 agricultural and commercial shows.

Revenue

The department generated K1,156 from consultations, postmortem, ante-mortem inspection, stock movement permits, and meat inspection.
